The Studio

I have a studio at Artpost Austin. It's a great old 1940's military hangar. I share space with encaustic artist Kristi Battani, and we are a fun stop on the East Austin Studio Tour every year.

I moved in December of 2010 and really love the natural light and quiet space I have to work. I welcome visits to my studio, just drop me a line on the contact page and we can schedule something.

The Right Hemisphere

Right Hemisphere

40" x 40"

Acrylic and paper on birch panel

This piece was on display at the Austin Bergstrom International airport for May, June, and July of 2012. The piece is made from cut paper, including painted paper, bits and pieces of Origin Magazine, and some art paper. The piece took over 60 hours to create and provided a lot of time for me to find a nice zen moment or two in my life :).

This piece is currently for sale. Please inquire about pricing.

Perspective

What could be more simple than a blade of grass? Lately, I've been inspired by the idea of simplicity. Specifically, the observation that even the 'simplest'  things really aren't simple.

This piece is a comprised of a total of 18 paintings, each an independent small abstract, but viewed together in a grid form a macro view into a patch of grass. Each painting is a 12" x 12" oil painting on panel. I'm hanging them all on one large 8' x 10' studio wall.

Stop by my studio in mid November and check it out!

Agave 1

16" x 16"

Acrylic, Encaustic, and Oil Stick on wood panel

Encaustic is a new medium for me and I'm just now beginning to experiment with it. The potential for texture is really fun. It feels like a mix between painting, cooking, and sculpture. If that makes sense.

Red Sun

Red Sun

36" x 36"

Oil on canvas

This piece was painted from a rubbing I made of a carved piece of stone in a Mithraic temple in Rome. The bottom level of the Basilica San Clemente, to be exact. The rubbing was made in 1995 while I was there on a college trip. Last time I checked, it was still there. It is a sun shape that correlates to the Mithraic pagan religion of worshipping the sun. What's interesting about this piece to me is that it's possible to take a symbol created thousands of years ago and interpret it with color, and it has impact and meaning still today.

This is probably my most popular painting, and has been the subject of multiple album covers and even a tattoo.

I still have this piece and it's not for sale, although it reproduces on canvas quite nicely at up to 36" in size.
